One of the reasons the New Deal is such an important historical event is that it helped to transform the Democratic Party from the party of slavery and racism to a party that advocated the extension of civil rights to the oppressed. Using material covered in the in-class lectures and from the assigned readings, what contributed to this transformation? How long did this transformation take place? What have been the consequences?
