Written Assignment 1

In Wednesday's lecture, we discussed how history was used to write the song The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. Your assignment, should you chose to accept it, is to find a similar instance of someone using history as a popular cultural reference, either in a song, book, or movie. Demonstrate how this work relies upon common knowledge (or common misperceptions) about the historic event it depicts to make a larger point. This should be accomplished in a 2-3 page paper, with 1 inch margins and a conventional 12 point font, and is due on Wednesday, January 18.
